In Circulation: Recent Collages is an exhibition of new collage works by Charlie Goering in The Drawing Room. Over the past two years collage has become an increasingly import aspect in Goering’s practice. These works on paper, for Goering, are an extension of drawing and exist parallel in importance to his paintings. The source materials for the collages are primarily found by visiting bookstores and by searching through overlooked or discarded mass media materials. Quotidian images, discarded paper ephemera, and cut paper make up the mesh of his collages. The compositions are formed through free association, making up the patchwork of color and images in these works. In a recent text for Goering’s show Situational Awareness, Morgan Mcknight says:

“…Goering uses his collage practice to improvise situations, again removing the object from its context to study the subject purely for its formal characteristics.”

Goering strives for a way of working that is self-sustaining. Using what is around him and what can be folded into his ever-evolving visual language to create work that can be iterated. This way of working is equally evident in the artists painted works, some of which will be on view in an upcoming three-person exhibition this November alongside Ashley Garrett and Evan Halter at Turley Gallery.

Goering received his BFA from the Laguna College of Art and Design in 2016. He was the recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Grant in 2017 as well as the artist in residence at Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, OH the same year. He has exhibited in the US, UK, and China. Goering was most recently included in the group shows, Witch, Cub and Dream Hunter at Brownie Project, Shanghai (2020), and A Vase is A Vase is A Vase at Deanna Evan Project in New York (2021). His solo show Situational Awareness opened in Los Angeles late 2021.
